Prior to Sunday, the 85th edition of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), also known as the Academy Awards or Oscar, which held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California would never have been imagined to enthrone the several records that were erased and reset. But that was exactly what happened.
At the ceremony, viewed by over 40 million people worldwide, Adele's Skyfall became the first James Bond theme to win the Oscar for Best Original Song, although three of his themes — Live and Let Die, For Your Eyes Only and Nobody Does it Better ― had been nominated over the last 50 years without winning.
In other highlights of the night, Walt Disney Studios earned a record 17 Oscar nominations in the studio's history in a single award year ― 12 for Lincoln, one for The Avengers, one for Brave, one for Frankenweenie, one for Paperman, and one for Wreck-It Ralph.
Similarly, Daniel Day-Lewis became the first actor in the history of The Oscars to win three Best Actor awards (1989, 2007, and 2012).
Emmanuelle Riva, at 85, became the oldest nominee in the Best Actress category while nine-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis became the youngest nominated actress in the Best Actress category.
Some of the awards at this year’s Oscars were tweaked, the Academy Award for Best Art Direction becoming the Academy Award for Best Production Design (after the Art Directors Branch of AMPAS became the Designers Branch) and the Academy Award for Best Makeup becoming the Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
Ben Afleck, who many have constantly bashed for his supposed inexistent acting skills, turned out to be the belle of the ball at the Academy Awards, winning the Best Picture category, the award for Editing, as well as Best Adapted Screenplay for his movie, Argo.
In a dramatic turn of events, 22-year-old Jennifer Lawrence stumbled while gliding to the podium to accept her Oscar for Best Actress in a movie for her eccentric role in David O Russell's Silver Linings Playbook.
Two-time Oscar nominee and first-time winner, Anne Hathaway was unusually composed when her name was announced as winner for the Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in movie-musical Les Miserables but at the backstage, the I-dreamed-A-dream singer became a bag of emotions as she choked up while talking to the press about her win.
Life of Pi, the story of a 16-year-old Indian boy’s passage to America, scooped the highest number of awards (four) and earned Director Ang Lee his second Oscar for Best Director category. It also won The Oscars for Cinematography, Visual Effects and Original Score.
